For overweight people, and sadly a lot of us are overweight, losing weight in form of body fat is probably the best thing to improve health. Some of us already lost a lot of body fat and keeping it off is a very good idea and already difficult enough. Nevertheless, even if you never had problems with excess bodyweight, not gaining fat mass is one of the most relevant factors for a healthy lifestyle which can be traced even to the molecular level. Now this may be quite easy for you: you have good genetics and/or a lifestyle that helps maintaining your physique. But as life goes on, things can become more challenging…
Your new job might chain you to the desk. You are not in the football team anymore. As you age, your gene expression changes. Whatever it is, you are (slowly) gaining fat every day even if you never had this issue. In most cases, you are not used to step onto a scale. You have probably never measured your portion sizes or tracked your macros. As you were skinny, you may think that you can easily lose that fat later and theoretically you are right. But if you are not willing to put in the effort now, why later? Loosing fat requires dedication and self control. This sounds quite unsexy, hm? So, if you are reading this, and you are one of those naturally skinny luckers, thinking about prevention might be a really good idea. Don’t wait until it is too late and you already put on too much weight!
Here are two simple advices to maintain a good physique:
– Put on some muscles. If you don’t want to loose weight, going into a controlled bulking phase might be a good idea to get used to portion control and build muscle at the same time. Tracking your macros is really easy nowadays and doesn’t take much time: download an app, weigh your food, log it. That’s it. In the beginning it will be a little tricky, but after a few weeks, you will not even have to think about it anymore. And don’t worry you don’t have to track forever. Ah, do not forget your strength training of course ;).
– Start cooking! This isn’t rocket science! Learning to cook doesn’t take a lot of time and is probably the best investment in long term health and happiness. Buy yourself a nice cookbook or follow a good blog with tasty, healthy food (more coming soon 😉 ) and get cooking. Focus on super simple recipes that you really enjoy and slowly add more complex creations. Get some spices of solid quality, they will help you immensly! Transforming a bland chicken breast into something awesome with just a little bit of smoked paprika is still one of the most satisfying things you can do in your kitchen.
Keep implementing healthy habits to your lifestyle and your future self will thank you!
