The Power Of Habits

Practical insights for a powerful tool.

The idea of researching about the power of habits was inspired by our friend and first-time client Alexa: she asked us if we can write a guideline about developing good habits and how to get rid of bad habits. Two days later I spotted on Instagram a perfect matching book: Atomic Habis, An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear. It does not surprise me that the fitness community seems to love the book: habits are a powerful self development tool and most strength trainees strive for improvement not only in the gym. While motivation comes and goes, habits are built to stay, which, in case of good habits, is desirable but may make reaching certain goals more difficult in case of bad habits.

Upates Part 2

Update on my postdoc’s life, coaching, education and more

Stefan already wrote a nice update which you should check if you have not done it already. There was a lot going on for both of us, therefore I will add some additional points. By the way it is the first article of mine since ages and I am glad having some time for writing. This will also be one of the last personal blog posts for a long time as we want to get back to proper content and recipes for you!

Waldorf Salad

The light and protein packed version.

I know, Waldorf salad sounds boring, somehow very 80’s and not so exciting as perhaps a duck roast or shortbread. But to be honest I really like it: it’s refreshing, creamy and it has a sentimental component for me. My mum bought it from the butcher and we ate it with all kinds of meat. In Italy the meat is usually cooked in a quite boring way (no sauces, scarse seasoning) and the Waldorf salad was a real highlight. The original recipe requires mayonnaise which does not fit in our current macros. Nevertheless, we managed to create a lighter but no less tastier version of it.

The Detox Myth

Please, stop it

“Detox”… every time I hear this word my scientific soul dies a little bit. Because I can not believe that we still follow such hocus-pocus. Well, there are people out there telling you that vaccins cause autism or the earth is flat or whatever esoteric crap is the newest sh*t.  Ok, sorry for the rant but it drives me crazy when people use other people’s lack of knowledge, as in the case of all this “cleanse” and “detoxes” popping up every year either during Lent season or as summer is approaching. They promise you to clear the body from harmful “toxins”, that prevent you from losing fat or making you feel sleepy or whatsoever. Usually, a restrictive diet in liquid form (juices anyone?) and/or an expensive supplement is prescribed, promising loss of weight and other miracles.  Is there any truth behind this stuff?

Time for Pancakes

Two Pancake Recipes.

Pancakes are a delicious treat, quick and easy to prepare but they can quickly turn out in a great mess if you do not have a proper non-stick pan and some patience. We have two recipes here, which are very different one from another but both definitely worth sharing. And even if we are not the biggest fans of “high protein-low calories treats” sometimes you just want something nice to eat and the non-diet version doesn’t fit to your goals. Enough said, give our pancakes a try!

Fermented Carrots with Star Anise

Easy, fizzy, healthy goodness.

Fermented food and microbiome are nowadays a hot topic not only in the science community: it has become quite popular in the media too. While some supplement selling companies are making money with it, promising to get you shredded by eating the proper microbiota they sell, scientist are aware that the picture is far more complex. The microbiome definitely plays a role in a lot of physiologic and pathologic processes and you have positive effects from eating probiotica and prebiotica like resistent starches but we still do not know exactly all of the players responsible for the effects. Nevertheless, eating fermented food seems beneficial to almost everbody, so here is an easy recipe to get you started!
